Open Call - Request for Qualifications: E. Gude Plaza Mural Project

VisArts, with the support of Rockville Economic Development Inc. (REDI) and Promark Partners, invites professional artists to create a site-specific digital mural design. This project will reproduce an original artwork from the selected artist. The final design image will be printed on commercial sign material and installed on the facade of the Gude Plaza Storage Sense building at 1350 E Gude Drive, Rockville, MD 20850, facing Southlawn Lane. The final design will be provided to VisArts as a scalable, vector based file for large scale printing.


 


 


 

Eligibility 

This Request for Qualifications is open to artists living within Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. 

 

Budget 

  • Three artists selected to submit their mural designs to the Artist Selection Committee will each receive $1000. 
  • The artist selected to create the final design will receive $5000.

Process 

  • VisArts will bring together an Artist Selection Committee to review applicants’  portfolios and select finalists. The committee will be comprised of stakeholders and representatives from REDI, Promark Partners, and VisArts
  • Up to three finalists will be selected to develop more detailed proposals, including images and a narrative, following review of artists’ submissions and portfolios. 
  • The Artist Nomination Committee will recommend one artist to be awarded the mural project.

 

Project Timeline 

  • Request for Qualifications deadline: October 25, 2024 
  • Finalists notified by: November 1, 2024 
  • Presentation of  proposals to Artist Nomination Committee: November 15, 2024 
  • Selection of final design by Artist Nomination Committee: November 22, 2024 
  • Installation process: Spring 2025 
  • Ribbon cutting: Spring 2025

Application Procedure 

All materials must be submitted online in accordance with the instructions provided below. Hand-delivered or mailed submissions won't be accepted. Only online submissions will be considered for review.

  • Up to ten digital images, including title, media, location, budget, and year 
  • Bio/CV 
  • Cover letter that includes how this project relates to your past work, your approach to this project, and the key themes and concepts driving your work. Include  your experiences with community engagement as it relates to your work. 
  • List of up to three recent public art commissions; include a reference/contact person, phone number, and email address for each project.
